Description Winemaking here dates back to Roman times – even then it was clear Alentajo wines were tops for quality. Monks continued the tradition and, more recently, since 2007, the Ribafreixo estate has done the same. Nearby are famous properties such as Vinus and Cortes de Cima, while Ribafreixo itself has twice been named Winery of the Year. Winemaker Paulo Laureano has a worldwide reputation, with experience in the New World and the Old. He’s a firm believer in supreme care in the vineyard and the use of organic methods. Here he’s used prized varieties Touriga Nacional and Aragonez, with a little Alicante. Aged in barrel for six months and in bottle for four years, the wine has many layers of complexity. Tasty with pork and butter bean casserole.
