Description Three hours NW of Madrid, with its baked red soils, is Toro. For 1,000 years this ancient land has grown vines and has made some of the blackest richest reds. In local folklore, it's said that King Alfonso XI claimed “I have a bull (Toro) who makes wine and a lion who drinks it." This is the story that inspired Felix Solís from the renowned winemaking clan and started his Toro winemaking project. He has spent a decade getting together 100 growers to contribute grapes to make his special King inspired red. With winemaker Maria Melendez, they've used all old-vine Tempranillo (here known as Tinta del Toro), hand-picked and aged three months in barrel. Silky with rich, dark fruit – excellent with grilled red meats or a warming casserole.
